Topsoe to begin delivering SOEC modules to First Ammonia from 2025

First Ammonia has finalised the sales and service agreements with Topsoe for the fabrication of the first 100MW of solid oxide electrolyser (SOEC) modules.

Topsoe will provide the systems from its new factory in Herning, Denmark, to the US-based project at the Port of Victoria in Texas, with deliveries expected to begin from Q1 2025.

H2 View understands that the project will produce up to 100,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia and is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2027.

Topsoe’s Danish plant is set to begin electrolyser manufacturing operations by the end of the year, with plans to produce 500MW of solid oxide electrolysers annually. In March (2024), the site secured an environmental permit from the Danish Environmental Agency.

“Seeing the solid oxide electrolyser production underway in Herning shows how much progress we have made on this journey together,” explained Joel Moser, First Ammonia CEO.

“I am confident that Topsoe solid oxide electrolysers will be part of the larger solution to the world’s decarbonisation goals by establishing a hydrogen economy – and the production of green ammonia together will help take us there.”

Kim Hedegaard, Topesoe Power-to-X CEO, said the Port of Victoria project will be “vital to decarbonising energy-intensive industries such as long-distance transportation and maritime shipping.”

The CEO added, “Our SOEC technology continues to perform very well in testing and our factory remains on schedule to be operational by the end of the year.

“We are thankful for First Ammonia’s trust in Topsoe and our technology and are excited by the opportunities that lie ahead.”
