Success stories of large-scale low-carbon hydrogen projects are hard to come by. Currently, only two green hydrogen plants with electrolyser capacities exceeding 100MW are operational. Together, they produce nearly 39 tonnes of green hydrogen daily.
By the end of 2025, the number of green hydrogen plants exceeding 100MW is expected to increase eightfold. In the best-case scenario, these projects have the potential to deliver 2,800 tonnes per day (tpd) of clean hydrogen to the market, worldwide.
China, green methanol and large-scale electrolyser realities
It is no secret that China has advanced green hydrogen production and infrastructure more than any other nation. China is also the largest producer of fossil fuel-based hydrogen, producing 23.7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) more than the US. The only two large-scale operational green hydrogen plants in the world are located in China.
