thyssenkrupp Steel has launched a call for tender to supply 143,000 tonnes of hydrogen for its first direct reduction plant in Duisburg, Germany.
Aiming to decarbonise its steelmaking processes in three phases, thyssenkrupp wants to begin using hydrogen at its plant in 2028, before a 100% hydrogen operation to follow in 2029.
Germany’s largest steel mill has an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of directly reduced iron, with the use of around 143,000 tonnes of hydrogen expected to enable up to 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 saved per year.
