Lloyd’s Register (LR) is set to class Torghatten Nord’s two hydrogen-powered ferries after they were awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) in 2022.
Expected to be the world’s largest ships operating on green hydrogen at least 85% of the time, they are going to be deployed on the outer Vestifjorden in Lofoten passage, which H2 View understands is one of Norway’s most challenging routes.
Norwegian Ship Design Company secured a shipyard contract to construct the two vessels earlier this month (April). They will be built in collaboration with Torghatten Nord and Myklebust Shipyard, finally beginning construction after being in the works for five years.
