Indian steelmaker Tata has begun a trial involving the injection of hydrogen into a blast furnace at its Jamshedpur steel mill.
Tata will be running a 40% injection system into the ‘E’ blast furnace, a move which is intended to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by reducing the amount of coke being burned.
Uttam Singh, Vice President, Iron Making, Tata Steel, said it was the first time that such a large quantity of hydrogen gas is being continuously injected in a blast furnace. He said, “We are confident that this trial will provide valuable insights into operating blast furnaces with hydrogen and help us identify the next steps towards achieving our goal of a leaner carbon future.”
The trial has the potential to reduce the amount of coke being burned by 10%, translating into around 7-10% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of crude steel produced.
