Tata Steel’s new steel pipes have been approved as compliant for the transportation of pure gaseous hydrogen at 100 bar of pressure.
The steel major said its API X65 ERW pipes were qualified by the Italian testing, inspection and certification (TIC) organisation RINA-CSM, making them viable for hydrogen infrastructure.
While pipelines have been slated as one of the most low-cost ways of transporting hydrogen over long distances, hydrogen embrittlement – where hydrogen atoms diffuse into steel, weakening its structure – is a key challenge when using steel.
