Tata Steel’s hydrogen-ready pipes approved for 100 bar transport

Tata Steel’s new steel pipes have been approved as compliant for the transportation of pure gaseous hydrogen at 100 bar of pressure.

The steel major said its API X65 ERW pipes were qualified by the Italian testing, inspection and certification (TIC) organisation RINA-CSM, making them viable for hydrogen infrastructure.

While pipelines have been slated as one of the most low-cost ways of transporting hydrogen over long distances, hydrogen embrittlement – where hydrogen atoms diffuse into steel, weakening its structure – is a key challenge when using steel.

Tata said its pipes, processed at its Khopoli plant using steel made at its Kalingangar, achieved “all the critical properties required for hydrogen transportation.”

The firm claims to be India’s “first” steel company to demonstrate “end-to-end capabilities to develop steel pipes” for hydrogen transportation.

Prabhat Kumar, Vice-President – Marketing & Sales at Tata Steel, said the development would contribute towards India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission to build capacity to produce at least five million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030.
