Sunborne Systems completes test of ammonia reactor technology for marine transport

Sunborne Systems has completed operational tests of its ammonia reactor technology which targets the retrofit of existing fossil fuel-powered propulsion systems and energy generators.

Founded in 2021 by Reaction Engines, the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and cleantech venture investor Kiko Ventures, Sunborne Systems is developing lightweight, compact ammonia reactor technologies for use in hard-to-abate applications such as marine transport.

The core of Sunborne’s technology is the reactor, which real-time transforms stored liquid ammonia into an optimised blend of hydrogen, nitrogen and uncracked ammonia.

Oxfordshire-based Sunborne’s technology combines Reaction Engines’ thermal management and heat exchanger technology with the UK Technology & Science Facility Council’s expertise in catalyst chemistry, as well as drawing on the expertise in both organisations in system design and optimisation for a range of applications.
