Study beigns on hydrogen-powered car carrier

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and e5 Lab. Inc. will conduct a joint study on a car carrier powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system and large-capacity batteries.

The two ship transportation companies will work together to develop a hydrogen car carrier which does not emit any harmful emissions and achieves zero emissions.

For the study, both companies will conduct technological and business feasibility studies on the hydrogen hybrid car carrier, and when they gain positive results, will move onto the next phase of jointly developing an actual hydrogen hybrid car carrier.

MOL has been working on zero emission vessels since 2009, and in 2012 launched the world’s first hybrid car carrier, equipped with the world’s largest-scale solar power generation system and batteries.
