Strict hydrogen production criteria may delay investments: IEA

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that extra requirements for electricity used in green hydrogen production should be “applied cautiously” by policymakers.

Additionality, temporal correlation and grid proximity requirements planned in the EU and US demand hydrogen is produced using electricity from new low-emission projects rather than existing facilities; demonstrate that electrolysers are powered by renewable electricity at specific intervals; and that hydrogen is produced in the same control area as the electricity source.

However, the IEA’s Towards Common Criteria for Sustainable Fuels report has argued these should be applied cautiously “to avoid placing the full burden of transitioning energy systems on those who are investing in clean technologies.”

The IEA wrote, “Power grids are decarbonising rapidly worldwide, independent of hydrogen deployment.
