Stiesdal Hydrogen selects Agfa’s Zirfon membranes for 3MW alkaline electrolysers

Stiesdal Hydrogen has said it will use Agfa’s Zirfon membranes in its 3MW alkaline electrolysers.

Used in a wide range of alkaline systems, Zirfon membranes are hailed as the industry standard – allowing electrolysers to turn down to low nominal loads to adapt to fluctuating energy inputs while maintaining efficiency and stability.

Bo Birkemose, Head of Strategic Partnership at Stiesdal Group, said that Zirfon’s “renowned properties and long-term reliability” make it “ideal” for the firm’s HydroGen systems.

“It ensures efficiency and stable operation, even under fluctuating conditions typical of renewable energy,” he added.

Agfa is currently dramatically expanding Zirfon manufacturing capacity at its plant in Mortsel, Belgium to support up to 20GW of alkaline electrolysers per year, supported by a €11m Innovation Fund grant.

A subsidiary of the Danish climate technology firm Stiesdal, the electrolyser maker was launched in 2020, with the aim of manufacturing systems for low-cost green hydrogen production.

Having put a HydroGen electrolyser unit into operation at European Energy’s first green hydrogen production facility in Måde, Denmark, by opting to use Afga membranes, Stiesdal says it will be able to enhance flexibility with intermittent renewables.

Employing a modular and industrialised design, Stiesdal’s electrolysers operate at 35 bar. Built in self-contained units, the company says there are “minimal” Balance of Plant (BOP) requirements to allow for “plug-and-play installation.”

In April, the company agreed to use Danfoss Heat Exchangers’ technology to further improve efficiency and flexibility.
