German steelmaker Salzgitter has started construction of a 100MW electrolyser plant that will supply green hydrogen for its low-carbon steel production processes.
EPC firm Andritz will install the 100MW HydrogenPro alkaline electrolysers at the Flachstahl site for start-up in 2026.
The hydrogen produced will replace coking coal in direct reduced iron (DRI) production before electric arc furnaces transform the reduced iron and scrap steel into final steel products – cutting CO2 emissions by up to 95%.
