SSE, EET Hydrogen plan to build 40MW UK green hydrogen production plant

SSE and EET Hydrogen have revealed plans for a new 40MW green hydrogen production project in Ellesmere Port, that will supply hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the UK northwest.

Located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex, the Gowy Green Hydrogen project could come online as early as 2028, according to the energy firms.

With feasibility studies already completed, the pair are now working on design and site investigation works, with a planning application expected to “move forward” in 2025, ahead of a final investment decision (FID).

The partners have said hydrogen produced by the plant will be delivered to industrial offtakers in the region.

Coming in addition to EET Hydrogen’s planned 350MW HPP1 and 1GW HPP2 blue hydrogen projects, CEO, Joe Seifert, said the firm was “delighted” to partner on the new project with SSE.

EET Hydrogen has already signed 30 memoranda of understanding (MoU) with potential low-carbon hydrogen customers including Tata Chemicals, ESB Carrington and more, from its initial blue hydrogen plants.

Hannah Bronwin, Director of Business Development for SSE Thermal, said, “We’re excited to work with EET Hydrogen to develop Gowy Green Hydrogen, which can help secure much-needed hydrogen production capacity in a region which is already playing a leading role in the energy transition.”

It comes after the energy firm scrapped two of its planned UK green hydrogen projects earlier this year.

SSE had planned to build production capacity at Scotland’s Gordonbush wind farm and was exploring large-scale green hydrogen production using Dogger Bank B wind power.

However, after the Gordonbush project didn’t secure UK government funding, and the firm pivoted the Dogger Bank wind connection for electricity, both projects were dropped.
