SSAB and Fortum have concluded a study into producing hydrogen-reduced sponge iron at SSAB’s steel plant in Raahe, Finland, finding a commercial arrangement is not possible.
In June (2023) the pair said they would conduct a front-end engineering design (FEED) study to explore the industrial-scale production of sponge iron and building a hydrogen production plant.
