South Korea’s LUPro to produce green ammonia in Oman for export to Southeast Asia

South Korea’s LUPro has agreed to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia per year with Muscat Investment House in Oman and export it to Thailand and Southeast Asia.

The facility, scheduled to be located in Duqm, will begin exporting ammonia volumes to Thailand in 2027, where it will be sold to other industrial users in Southeast Asia by Thai firm MA Corporation.

Initially, LUPro and Muscat House plan to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia per year and scale up to a total of five million tonnes over five years using a 2GW power generation facility to supply it to Thailand.

The supply from the first phase could generate up to 6.5 trillion won ($4.88bn) over five years according to LUPro.

They plan to expand the power facilities to more than 5GW to produce more than 2.5 million tonnes per year and expand the supply to markets in Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea.

H2 View understands that the project is the “world’s first” to have a full cycle of production, transportation and sales of green ammonia.

Commenting on the decision to produce green ammonia in Oman, Kim Se-ho, LUPro Chairman, said, “It costs about 330 won per kW in Korea, but in Oman, green ammonia can be produced at a cost of 5 won per kW.

“It is economically viable enough to be established as a new business model in the era of energy transition,” the Chairman added.

Archirson Ma, CEO of MA Corporation, explained that despite Thailand having no obligation to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050, signing the “first” green ammonia introduction contract in the country will allow them to “play a leading role in achieving carbon neutrality.”

However, LUPro has not confirmed whether land has been secured in Duqm to develop the project.

Last August, bp revealed it will acquire a 49% stake in a 2.7GW hydrogen and ammonia production project in Duqm, which could produce up to 650,000 tonnes of green ammonia for export once its second phase is completed.
