As part of a first step in establishing a state-wide hydrogen injection standard in California, SoCalGas and SDG&E have unveiled plans for a ground-breaking hydrogen blending demonstration.
In an announcement released today (23rd Nov) the two companies said they hope to leverage surplus renewable electricity generated in the middle of the day to produce green hydrogen which will be injected into the natural gas grid for storage and use.
To make such vision a success, SoCalGas is developing power-to-gas technology in collaboration with the National Fuel Cell Research Centre, and the University of California Irvine.
Once complete, the efforts will mark the US’ first power-to-gas demonstration project since 2015.
