SK Plug Hyverse completes construction of liquid hydrogen bus refuelling station

SK Plug Hyverse has completed the construction of a liquid hydrogen refuelling station that will supply the energy carrier to local commuter buses.

Set up in Icheon, Gyeonggi-Do, the SK E&S and Plug Power joint venture station is equipped with a four-tonne liquid hydrogen storage tank, a cryogenic pump and two refuelling dispensers, offering up to 120kg of hydrogen per hour.

With plans to convert over 2,000 existing fossil-fuelled buses to hydrogen by 2026, the installation will service SK Hynix’s hydrogen commuter bus fleet operating on the semiconductor firm’s Icheon Campus.

Supported by the South Korean Government, the station’s construction began in August 2023, with the companies undertaking a successful test run earlier this year.

Hydrogen will be supplied to the site by SK E&S’ 30,000-tonne-per-year liquid hydrogen plant, which was opened just two months ago.

SK E&S’ Vice-President, said, “[Liquid hydrogen refuelling] stations have the advantage of being suitable for large-commercial vehicles, so they are expected to spread in earnest along with the recent expansion of commercial vehicles such as hydrogen buses.”

Last month, SK Plug Hyverse awarded Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gas Group (CE&IG) a contract to build and maintain around 24 liquid hydrogen refuelling stations.
