The Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) has commissioned Siemens Energy to supply a 100MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser plant.
The German consortium, including Luxcara and Hamburger Energieweke, aims to produce around 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen once commercial operations begin in 2027. The Moorburg site received Important Project of Common European Interest status in February (2024) from the EU.
Under the contract, Siemens Energy will provide six units of its electrolyser model to form the 100MW plant – expected to begin construction next year (2025) at its new gigafactory in Berlin and assembled at their Mühlheim site.
The former Moorburg coal-fired plant is being partially dismantled to make room for the 100MW electrolyser and the connection to the HH-WIN hydrogen distribution network. Ramboll was awarded the FEED contract and is now nearing completion of the design and planning for the plant.
The connection to the extra-high voltage grid will continue to supply the electrolyser with renewables after it is converted and relocated.
H2 View understands the green hydrogen production capacity of the plant is scheduled to gradually ramp up, to ensure stable operation of the hydrogen distribution network.
Once a portfolio of hydrogen consumers is identified, green hydrogen will be supplied via the HH-WIN distribution network and the planned truck loading station.
“The order for the electrolyser is a milestone for our project,” explained Christoph Cosler, Managing Director of HGHH. “The decisive factor for this step was the national funding decision that we received for our project in mid-July. After all the preparatory work, we are now moving on to the actual implementation.”
Alexey Ustinov, Head of Sustainable Energy Systems at Siemens Energy, added, “Without green molecules, the energy transition will not succeed. It is good that the German Government is doing its part to ensure that this project can now be realised quickly by providing the funding.”
In addition to the HGHH project, Siemens Energy announced it would supply a 280MW electrolysis system to EWE in July (2024).

Located in Emden, the 26,000-tonne-per-year plant is anticipated to begin producing hydrogen in 2027.
