Royal Dutch Shell has committed to becoming a net zero emissions energy business by 2050 or sooner.
The Anglo-Dutch company said it will work towards this in three ways, firstly by seeking to be net zero on all emissions from the manufacture of its products by 2050 at the latest.
Secondly, it will reduce the net carbon footprint of its energy products. Shell said to achieve this, it will need to sell more products with a lower carbon intensity, such as hydrogen.
Thirdly, to achieve its goal of becoming a net zero emissions energy business, Shell said it will help its customers decarbonise. The company will work with its customers to address the emissions which are produced when they use the fuels they buy from Shell.
