Shell takes FID on 100MW green hydrogen plant for refining

Shell Deutschland has taken the final investment decision (FID) to build a 100MW green hydrogen project at its Rheinland Energy and Chemicals Park.

Under the Refhyne II project, the oil and gas major will use 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year produced by a PEM electrolyser system to partially replace grey hydrogen used in its refinery operations.

Scheduled to start operations in 2027, the project will use ITM Power PEM electrolyser technology, after Shell signed a capacity reservation agreement last December.
