It is estimated that 90% of all freight goods are transported by sea, which makes the maritime sector a significant contributor to harmful emissions.
It was recognised some years ago that commitments to slash CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) by 50% by 2050 required a sea of change – with new solutions needed around how vessels are built, powered and regulated.
Enter hydrogen, and a push for deploying the alternative fuel across offshore, onshore and near-shore, as well as ocean vessels, speed boats and leisure crafts. Equipping the maritime sector of the future to adapt to hydrogen has been a focus for Luxfer since around 2016 – and the complexities of the application are still occupying its skilled engineers today.
