ScottishPower to assess feasibility of green hydrogen production plant at Shoreham Port

ScottishPower will explore the development of a green hydrogen production facility at Shoreham Port on the UK’s south coast.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two will conduct a feasibility study throughout the coming year, according to local reports.

Iberdrola-owned ScottishPower has yet to disclose the plant’s operational timeline or the expected electrolysis capacity.

Mark Bradley, Hydrogen Director at ScottishPower, explained that the company is working with Shoreham Port to “investigate how green hydrogen could help to decarbonise the port.”

Tom Willis, Chief Executive at Shoreham Port added, “Working in partnership with the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and delivered by Innovate UK, the Shoreham Port Industrial Cluster will shortly be publishing our Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plan.”

Willis said the research “highlights the key role hydrogen will play locally in achieving Net Zero” and “the positive conditions within the cluster for hosting production facilities.”

“In ScottishPower, we have secured a sector-leading partner with the scale and experience to build on the work completed to date and move forward towards a positive final investment decision (FID),” Willis concluded.

Since 2021, Shoreham Port has been advancing its plans to become a green energy hub.

Shoreham Port and H2Evolution announced they would develop a 20MW electrolysis plant aimed at producing green hydrogen for local transport and port operations four years ago.

Furthermore, H2 Green, a subsidiary of Getech, previously secured exclusive rights to develop a hydrogen and derivatives project at the port, which was further solidified in 2022 with a five-year extension.
