Scotland’s hydrogen sector will receive a £100m boost in the next five years to help drive a green recovery and transition to net zero.
The major investment is thought to accelerate great ambitions recently laid out in the Hydrogen Policy Statement which sets an ambition for Scotland to generate 5GW of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen by 2030.
Such release has been in the making for quite some time. Just last year, the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish Enterprise commissioned Arup and E4tech to carry out a Hydrogen Assessment to deepen the evidence base informing policymaking on hydrogen.
The assessment aimed to investigate how and where hydrogen may fit within the evolving energy system technically, geographically and economically. To assist in the consideration, a key part of the Hydrogen Assessment was the development of distinct viable scenarios for hydrogen deployment in Scotland and the economic assessment of those scenarios.
