Scottish consortium investigating liquid organic hydrogen carriers

A Scottish consortium is investigating how liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) can be used as a mass transportation solution from sources of hydrogen around the UK and Europe.

Unveiled yesterday (11th Feb), the project will focus on safe marine transportation and storage of hydrogen and will evaluate the techno-economical, safety and environmental benefits of LOHC for marine transportation.

OGTC, in partnership with Scottish Government, Global Energy Group, Pale Blue Dot, Port of Cromarty Firth, Environmental Resources Management (ERM) and Shetland Island Council will carry out the research.

ERM will carry out the initial phase of the study. Focused on safe marine transportation and storage of hydrogen, ERM will evaluate the techno-economical, safety and environmental benefits of LOHC for marine transportation.
