San Diego Gas and Electricity piloting two new hydrogen projects

US-based San Diego Gas and Electricity (SDG&E) announced on Monday (19^th April) two new hydrogen pilot projects set to support the company’s ambitions of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

One project, dubbed the Borrego Springs Green Hydrogen project, is looking to demonstrate hydrogen’s capabilities in long-duration energy storage, a microgrid asset in addition to being a resource for dispatch by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to support grid reliability.

This is set to expand on SDG&E’s 13 energy storage projects, totalling near 45MW of energy storage. To maximise the use of renewable energy and enhance reliability, SDG&E expects to have a total of 135MW of utility-owned energy storage integrated into the local grid.
