Salzgitter secures renewable power deal for green steelmaking

RWE Supply & Trading has agreed to support Salzgitter Group’s steelmaking ambitions with green electricity of up to 64GWh per year, which will run for seven years from 2027.

Under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), the German steel company will source electricity from the 180MW Boitzenburger Land solar park in Brandenburg, Germany, to power its electric arc furnaces and green hydrogen-produced steel.

As part of the SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) transformation programme, Salzgitter Flachstahl will gradually convert its steel production to electricity and hydrogen-based processes from 2026.
