Salzgitter AG has taken a major step in producing low-carbon steel with the commencement of construction of its steelmaking project, μDRAL, in Germany.
μDRAL is a demonstration plant that will produce direct reduced iron (DRI) with the plant being the first iron ore reduction facility designed to operate flexibly with natural gas and hydrogen.
€13.6m ($16m) has been invested in the plant with the German Federal Environment Ministry supporting the project with a 40% funding share.
