Safe S.p.A. will supply two hydrogen compressors to a production project in Sicily, dubbed H2Farm, for safe hydrogen storage and distribution.
Under the agreement signed with Agrobiofert, a Sicilian agricultural company, S.p.A. will provide a 30-foot cabin containing two high-efficiency hydraulic compressors with “three combined compression stages,” designed to reach 450 bar.
For the H2Farm project, the compressors will optimise the management of hydrogen produced. The project has been funded by PNRR resources and promoted by the Sicilian Region, with the ultimate goal being to build a 2.5MW plant for green hydrogen production, powered by PV.
H2 View understands that delivery of the compressors is scheduled for late summer 2025, in line with the plant’s operational start.
“Hydrogen is not only an opportunity for the industrial sector but also a key resource for reducing emissions and improving sustainability in the agricultural sector,” explained Giovanni Maccini, Commercial Director of Safe S.p.A.
The compressors also allow the hydrogen flow to be modulated without the need for inverters, “leveraging their hydraulic circuit for greater efficiency and operational simplicity,” according to the S.p.A. statement.
Additionally, the technology, manufactured in Italy, includes logic control panels, command and cooling systems, and its duplex configuration allows it to ensure operational continuity, meaning each compressor can operate independently to minimise downtime risks.
Sicily is emerging as a potential hub for green hydrogen production, due to its abundant solar resources.
Last April (2024), Axpo and ENEGO announced they would study the feasibility of a green hydrogen plant in Sicily, which they said could scale up to 300MW.
