RWE taps Sunfire for 100MW of alkaline electrolysers in FID’d 300MW hydrogen project

Sunfire will supply a 100MW alkaline electrolyser system to RWE’s 300MW GET H2 Nukleus project at its gas-fired power plant in Lingen, Germany, which it has now taken final investment decision (FID) on.

RWE said it had taken FID on the plant after it secured over €619m ($682m) in grants from federal and state governments for its Nukleus and Gronau-Epe projects.

The Sunfire system will work alongside two 100MW PEM units provided by ITM Power,

With the deal said to be in the “low-hundred-million-euro range,” Bilfinger will integrate the technology into the plant.

RWE expects the first 100MW of the GET H2 project to be commissioned next year, before expanding in 100MW increments to 300MW by 2027.

“The additional electrolysis plant in Lingen is another key building block in the transformation of our energy system towards efficient and sustainable technologies,” Dr. Thomas Schulz, CEO of Bilfinger said.

Hydrogen produced by the large-scale plant is planned to be supplied to industrial customers through pipelines, initially in the German states of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, with a view to expand distribution to the Netherlands.

From 2027, the project plans to feed hydrogen into RWE’s cavern storage facility in Gronau-Epe.

Dr. Sopna Sury, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at RWE Generation, said the construction of the project’s first 200MW was “progressing well.”

“This is sending out a strong signal to companies that are planning to switch their processes to green hydrogen,” Sury added. “With the pipeline and storage infrastructure of other GET H2 partners being built in parallel, we will soon be able to supply green hydrogen in line with market requirements and in a structured manner.”

It comes after RWE commissioned its 14MW pilot electrolyser plant in Lingen, equipped with a 10MW Sunfire system and 4MW unit from ITM.

“We are delighted about this renewed vote of confidence and look forward to our proven partnership with RWE,” said Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire.
