RWE has secured construction and environmental permits to build a 100MW electrolyser adjacent to the Magnum Power Station in Eemshaven, the Netherlands.
It’s expected that the electrolyser will contribute to the onshore energy system integration plans associated with the 795MW OranjeWind offshore wind project, which RWE is developing with TotalEnergies.

H2 View understands that the initiative will help address challenges in aligning the intermittent nature of renewable electricity production with the flexible energy demand and facilitate smoother integration into the Dutch energy system.
The confirmation of the 100MW electrolyser project is now subject to a final investment decision (FID), with a key condition being the timely availability of the necessary infrastructure, including the national hydrogen backbone to transport the green hydrogen.
“Securing the necessary permits brings us a step closer to realising this electrolyser in Eemshaven,” commented Sopna Sury, COO of Hydrogen at RWE Generation SE.
“With our plans of this electrolyser at the Eemshaven, RWE continues to contribute to the further growth in the area and helps to establish this cluster as a centre for renewable energy.”
Additionally, RWE is developing a 50MW electrolyser at the Eems Power Station, close to the Magnum site. The Eemshydrogen project has also been granted environmental and building permits.
Last May, the German firm received €124.9m ($133m) to advance its hydrogen initiatives in Eemshaven as part of a wider €250m ($267m) funding round.
