Rio Tinto has teamed up with the Australia Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to study whether hydrogen could replace natural gas in alumina refineries to support industrial net zero goals.
Revealed today (June 16), Rio Tinto will conduct a A$1.2m ($920,000) feasibility study, equally funded with ARENA through a A$580,000 ($446,765) grant, into using clean hydrogen to replace natural gas in the calcination process of refining in the Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone.
The study program also includes work to be done at Rio Tinto’s Bundoora Technical Development Centre in Melbourne, where the company’s in-house development capability has now been extended to include hydrogen.
