RINA approves Saipem’s subsea hydrogen pipeline proposal

H2 View understands that RINA has issued two certifications for Saipem’s plans for subsea hydrogen pipelines.

The Italian classification and marine engineering consultancy RINA granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to Saipem and the Technology Qualification for its hydrogen pipeline safety methodology.

Saipem has developed its own protocol to evaluate hydrogen pipeline performances, which sees the company determine the compatibility of the pipelines whilst in the planning and operational phases. Whilst hydrogen can be transported via converted or newly constructed pipelines, there is a risk of weakening materials.
