Just over a week ago, General Motors (GM) unveiled that is it expanding its reach in the hydrogen fuel cell business, having confirmed new commercial applications for its HYDROTEC technology as part of a new partnership with Utah-based Renewable Innovations.
Together, the duo has agreed to develop a Mobile Power Generator (MPG) to fast-charge electric vehicles and an EMPOWER rapid charger for retail fuel stations. Providing fast-charging capabilities without having to expand the grid or install permanent charging assets, MPGs will be able to support electric vehicles from later this year (2022).
On the other hand, GM and Renewable Innovations’ EMPOWER rapid charger aims to enhance direct current (DC) fast charging capabilities at retail fuel stations. Powered by eight GM HYDROTEC power cubes, the EMPOWER rapid charger consumes hydrogen from internal tanks and can DC fast charge as many as four vehicles simultaneously starting at 150kW with a target full charge time of 20 minutes.
