Quest One has begun construction of a demonstration plant for its Modular Hydrogen Platform (MHP) PEM electrolyser at MAN Energy Solutions’ Augsburg, Germany, site.
The 10MW electrolyser will generate data in test operation conditions to enable “comprehensive optimisation” of the plant operations, as well as the assembly and service concept of the electrolyser.
Additionally, potential customers and project developers will be able to visit the demonstration plant from mid-2025, to give them valuable insights into the construction phases, dimensions, inner workings and infrastructure required.
Throughout the course of 2025, the plant will be assembled ahead of first test operations in 2026. Last December, the two companies installed the freshwater treatment for the plant.
Furthermore, the development has been funded as part of the PEP.IN research project, a sub-project of the H2Giga hydrogen lighthouse initiative being undertaken by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
“It is essential to have industrial-scale electrolysers to meet the huge demand for green hydrogen in the future,” explained Jürgen Klöpffer, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Quest One and a Member of the Executive Board at MAN Energy Solutions.
“With our new hydrogen demonstration plant we will show that the technology for industrial-scale hydrogen production already exists. Prospects can now experience these advantages at our demonstration plant.”
Michael Meister, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Quest One, added, “The scalable system can be flexibly adapted to increasing hydrogen demands as the industry ramps up. The demonstration plant is an important means for us to further optimize the performance and operating parameters of the MHP.”
The electrolyser solution features a scalable modular design with 10MW blocks that can be combined for green hydrogen production, ranging from 10 to several hundred megawatts.
“This will ensure that our products continue to produce green hydrogen in a reliable and efficient way in the future,” the COO concluded.
