Pressure is mounting to address the emissions from the global shipping industry which today accounts for 2% of global energy related carbon dioxide and has come under increasing scrutiny for the impact dirty fuels have on air quality in densely populated areas that typically surround major ports.
The International Maritime Organisation, which sets greenhouse gas (GHG) strategy for its 173 member states, has mandated a 50% reduction in absolute emissions, and a 40% reduction by 2030 and 70% reduction by 2050 in carbon intensity, versus 2008 levels. It is a big task.
