Purina rolls out Nikola hydrogen truck for Californian deliveries

Nestlé Purina PetCare has started using a Nikola hydrogen-powered truck for deliveries across California.

The pet food firm, in collaboration with The Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) and Nikola, initially used the Class 8 fuel cell truck transporting Purina products between the cities of Stockton, Maricopa and Modesta.

With a range of up to 500 miles, the truck will be used by KAG to deliver the products across the state, as Purina looks to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“This truck represents an exciting opportunity to test new technology and determine if it’s feasible to scale,” said Travis Krous, Senior Director of Supply Chain Operations at Purina.

Purina joins other major firms trialling the truck. In July, Walmart Canada introduced a Nikola hydrogen vehicle into its fleet for operation in Ontario.

Nikola’s President and CEO, Steve Girsky, said, “We are proud to support Purina’s sustainability initiatives by supplying KAG with its first-ever hydrogen fuel cell electric Class 8 truck.”

Earlier this month, the zero-emission truck firm said it had sold 235 hydrogen trucks since the vehicle went on sale in Q4 2023, following expectations that the vehicle would outsell its battery-electric alternative by a factor of three.

It follows the mass recall of 209 battery-electric trucks following a fire of one of the vehicles in August 2023.
