Purem joins PoWer project to advance hydrogen engines

Purem by Eberspaecher has joined the PoWer project to support the development of hydrogen engines in construction and agricultural applications.

A consortium of manufacturers and institutions expects hydrogen engines to meet the requirements of non-road mobile machinery whilst taking into account future emission legislation.

H2 View understands that the Portuguese firm will contribute its expertise in the field of exhaust technology and materials science. The company said in a statement, “By developing various exhaust gas after-treatment concepts, the experts demonstrate compliance with the strictest emission legislation on the test bench.”

Alongside Eberspaecher will be automotive supplier MAHLE and other organisations and companies, including DEUTZ, NGK, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the Technical University of Braunchweig.

Avinash Mutharja, Executive Vice-President of Technology & Innovation at Purem by Eberspaecher, claimed there is a great opportunity for hydrogen engines in heavy-duty applications.

“We are therefore pleased to be part of this consortium and to play a key role in shaping its development,” he added. “Not only do we have decades of experience in exhaust technology, but we have also been carrying out pioneering research work in the field of hydrogen for several years.”

Last March, the UK government permitted hydrogen-powered tractors, diggers, and forklifts to be used on the roads. The consultation ran for four weeks and the feedback is now being analysed.
