Proposed PFAS bans will give rise to AEM hydrogen technology: Cipher Neutron CEO

With growing concerns around the use per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysers could become increasingly important for the hydrogen industry, H2 View has heard.

Co-founder and CEO of Canadian AEM start up, Cipher Neutron, Gurjant Randhawa, said that he expects to see “worldwide restrictions” on the use of PFAS in the near future, causing supply chain challenges for the hydrogen industry.

It comes after hydrogen technology companies raised concerns over EU plans to ban around 10,000 substances including PFAS – which are crucial for various elements within electrolysers and other technologies.

However, the Cipher Neutron Co-founder and CEO, Randhawa, believes his company’s PFAS-free electrolyser technology will have a crucial role to play in the long-term.
