PowerCell to support marine vessel project with 100kW fuel cells

PowerCell has agreed to deliver two 100kW marine fuel cells to retrofit an existing research vessel using a hydrogen-electric hybrid propulsion system.

O.S. Energy is working on the Transship II sustainable vessel project which is focused on transitioning the Prince Madog to showcase the “potential for sustainable propulsion systems in the maritime industry.”

Work on the vessel is expected to be completed early next year (2025), with a demonstration planned for March. The UK Department for Transport is supporting the project as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 3 (CMDC3), which is delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

The £5.5m ($7m) initiative will reduce the emissions of the Bangor University co-owned vessel by up to 60% and therefore align with global efforts to decarbonise the shipping industry.
