Swedish-based PowerCell has received a SEK 5.4m ($633,250) follow-on order for its MS-100 hydrogen-powered fuel cell systems from ZeroAvia which last year (2020), showcased the world’s first hydrogen electric flight of a commercial airplane.
The hydrogen-electric aircraft developer tested a single-engine six-seater Piper Malibu, which successfully carried out an eight-minute flight, achieving an altitude of 1,000 feet and a speed of 100 knots.
The aircraft is powered by a hydrogen-electric powertrain which features a PowerCell MS-100 fuel cell system as a fundamental part.
ZeroAvia is continuing to spearhead the development of hydrogen-powered aircraft with Andreas Boden, Director Sales & Marketing at PowerCell Sweden, stating, “ZeroAvia has proven that hydrogen-electric and zero emissions flying is a possibility and we have demonstrated that the technology exists here and now and that it is working.”
