Port of Gothenburg opens hydrogen refuelling station

The Port of Gothenburg has opened a 1,500kg-per-pay hydrogen refuelling station, supplying ‘exclusively’ green hydrogen to heavy-duty trucks.

Situated at the entrance of the port’s RoRo (roll-on, roll-off) terminal at Gate 6, the access road leading to the gate is said to be one of Sweden’s “most heavily trafficked roads” – with 400,000 heavy vehicles passing through each year.

Furthermore, with shipping firm Stena Line set to relocate its German and Danish terminals adjacent to the RoRo terminal, the port anticipates even more traffic in the area.

Operated by Hydri – the new name of Nilsson Energy – the station has both 700 and 350 bar dispensing available, with capacity to supply 1,500kg of hydrogen per day to around 35 trucks.

The Port of Gothenburg has said the station will “exclusively” supply green hydrogen.

“The large flow of trucks to the port and the possibility to refuel work machinery make the location for this hydrogen refuelling station ideal,” said Port of Gothenburg’s Head of Innovation, Viktor Allgurén.

“Combined with several existing charging stations around the port, heavy land transport at the Port of Gothenburg is now fully ready for a transition to both electricity and hydrogen.”

In March, an electric excavator was charged by an off-grid hydrogen generator during a 14-day trial at the Swedish port.
