Polenergia has obtained a building permit for its 5MW green hydrogen project and completed its first hydrogen co-combustion tests in Poland.
The tests were conducted at the company’s Nowa Sarzyna Cogeneration Plant (NSCP) in one of the gas turbines with a 40MW capacity. The Polish firm aimed to achieve a 10% share of hydrogen in the fuel, but they reportedly exceeded this and reached a hydrogen concentration of 15%.
Additionally, Polenergia has received the green light to install a 5MW electrolyser and hydrogen refuelling solution at the NSCP, dubbed the H2HUB Nowa Sarzyna project. Hystar has delivered eight electrolyser stacks to Gdánsk, where they will be connected to the rest of the electrolyser elements.
For the co-combustion tests, Polenergia used grey hydrogen. However, their target is to use green hydrogen produced via H2Hub Nowa Sarzyna. “Our goal is to use green hydrogen for emission-free transport and greening of heat, and in the longer term – electricity,” explained Iwona Sierzega, Member of the Polenergia Management Board.

Ultimately, green hydrogen production is part of the company’s strategy and the H2Hub project will complement its 105MW project in Upper Silesia. They also have eyes on further hydrogen production initiatives.
Commenting on the successful combustion tests, Miroslaw Rokicki, Technical Director and Member of the Management Board of Polenergia NSCP, said, “The next goal will be to increase the share of hydrogen in the fuel. This is a long-term process, also dependent on market conditions.”
Emilia Makarewicz, the company’s Director of Hydrogen Project Development, claimed this is the first permit issued for this type of project at Polenergia.
“Our H2Hub Nowa Sarzyna project has reached a milestone in the construction of an electrolyser, which has just passed factory tests,” Makarewicz added.
In July (2024), the Polish Government announced new subsidies and legislation to regulate and boost the country’s hydrogen industry.

They introduced an electrolyser manufacturing subsidy programme that will have a budget of PLN 2.7bn ($685m) next year.
