Plans have been unveiled for a hydrogen-powered aircraft that could enter service in 2026.
Bristol-based GKN Aerospace will lead a £54m UK collaboration programme, called H2Gear, to develop a hydrogen propulsion system for a sub-regional aircraft in a bid to accelerate aerospace decarbonisation to zero emissions.
Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the decarbonisation of aviation as it can power aircrafts efficiently, leaving water as the only by-product.
H2Gear aims to develop a liquid hydrogen propulsion system for sub-regional aircrafts that could be scaled up to larger aircrafts.
