Perstorp’s chemical plant in Stenungsund has been granted a changed environmental permit to produce sustainable methanol and build and operate an electrolysis plant for making hydrogen.
Perstorp sought the changed permit to enable the implementation of its Project Air initiative, and the amendment was authorised by the Land and Environment Court at Vänersborg District Court in Vänersborg, Sweden. The project, a cooperation between Perstorp and Uniper, aims to be fully operational by 2026.
The specialty chemicals company is constructing a new plant with CCU (Carbon Capture Utilisation) at the plant in Stenungsund where carbon dioxide emissions from the company’s own operations, together with other residual streams of biogas and renewable hydrogen, will be turned into sustainable methanol.
The methanol will be used as a raw material for other chemicals and makes it possible for thousands of end products and value chains to become more sustainable, and ending its dependence on fossil feedstock.
