Ohmium to help launch India’s first green methanol plant

Ohmium International is joining forces with two Indian organisations to establish the country’s “first” green methanol plant, powered by Ohmium’s PEM electrolyser technology for hydrogen production.

Ohmium will work alongside the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Breathe Applied Sciences and Spirare Energy to develop the project, which will combine green hydrogen with CO2 captured from the Singareni Thermal Power Plant to produce green methanol.

H2 View understands that the process to synthesise green methanol from CO2 emissions was developed by researchers at Breathe Applied Sciences and JNCASR. Additionally, Spirare partnered with Ohmium to procure the PEM solution.

“Converting CO2 from coal-based thermal power to green methanol can significantly advance decarbonisation and sustainability,” explained JNCASR Professor Sebastian Peter, Breathe Applied Sciences Co-Founder and Project Leader.

He added that he’s proud to see the research applied to a real-world project and “looks forward to seeing it scale.”

Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, said the firm is “pleased to collaborate again with Spirare Energy, a leader in sustainable development projects in India.”

He continued, “This is our second project together, and a very important one, as green methanol has the potential to significantly advance India’s energy independence and reduce CO2 emissions. Building on our previous success, this follow-on project demonstrates our joint dedication to India’s energy future.”

Just last week, Ohmium was awarded a ‘Hydrogen Generator Using Water Electrolysis’ certification from UL Solutions, which highlighted the company’s “dedication to safety and reliability.”
