Ohmium could supply 300MW of electrolysers to floating offshore hydrogen project

PEM electrolyser firm Ohmium has signed a term sheet to supply a 300MW offshore floating ammonia project with its green hydrogen production technology.

Under the non-binding agreement, the company will develop PEM electrolyser solutions for the project being developed by BW Offshore joint venture SwitcH2 off the coast of Southern Europe.

Planned to create an “industrial scale” floating green hydrogen and ammonia production technology, 300MW of Ohmium’s electrolysers will be installed onboard SwitcH2’s 268 metre floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

Once complete, the facility is expected to produce up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and almost 300,000 tonnes of ammonia annually.

The electrolysers will be powered by near-shore solar and wind power, using treated seawater to produce green hydrogen, which will be fed into an on-deck ammonia synthesis unit.

SwitcH2 Director and co-founder, Bob Rietveldt, said that Ohmium’s electrolysers were “ideally suited” to the FPSO setting due to them being compact and “hyper modular.”

“Their product delivers high efficiency, and the comprehensive, standardised design enables flexible and rapid installation, at scale,” he added.

Ammonia is planned to be offloaded onto a carrier for offtakers, potentially for use as a maritime fuel.

Having already secured an Approval in Principle for the design by DNV, as well as Dutch Government support, SwitcH2 could start ammonia production by 2029.

Ohmium CEO, Arne Ballantine, added, “We appreciate the expertise that SwitcH2 Joint Venture brings to offshore floating production, and their vision in leveraging renewables and green hydrogen for the creation of green ammonia.

“The market for green ammonia is poised to grow exponentially in the coming decades, especially as a source of clean fuel for the global shipping industry, and Ohmium is looking forward to collaborating with SwitcH2 in helping address that need.”

The Californian-headquartered company has been rapidly stepping up its developments over the past two years. Having secured contracts to supply numerous European projects, it has also expanded its manufacturing base in India.

In July, Ohmium launched a 2GW electrolyser factory just outside of Bengaluru, coming as its second site in the country.
