Nearly £50m ($64m) of Ofgem funding has been earmarked for UK hydrogen blending and de-blending projects, aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of transporting the energy carrier through existing gas grids.
Of the £49.1m (63.1m) funding envelope, National Gas Transmission will receive £33.3m ($42.7m) to work on adapting existing gas compression units for use with hydrogen, allowing for it to be fed into networks.
While the HyNTS consortium, led by National Grid Gas, has been awarded £9.9m ($12.7m) to establish a fully functioning de-blending and refuelling facility to demonstrate how grid-extracted hydrogen can be purified and used for refuelling.
