Plans to use nuclear power to produce hydrogen for asphalt and cement production have been backed by a £6.1m ($7.6m) grant from the UK Government.
The Bay Hydrogen Hub plans to build a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) electrolyser at the Heysham 2 Power Station in Lancashire to produce hydrogen which would be transported by tankers to construction material producer Hanson’s Criggon asphalt plant in North Wales.
Generating 1.25GW of electricity from nuclear, the station will divert small quantities of electricity and steam to the onsite SOEC.
