NTPC to develop 1,500 TPD green hydrogen hub in India

India’s NTPC Green Energy will develop a $21bnn green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, capable of producing 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen and 7,500 tonnes of derivatives daily.

The ‘NTPC Green Energy LTD Green Hydrogen Hub’ will be launched under the country’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and is expected to contribute to India’s capacity target of 500GW by 2030. The strategy has encouraged the domestic production of electrolysers, so NTPC could potentially use products developed by Reliance Industries or L&T.

H2 View understands that the hub will be equipped with a capacity of 20GW of renewable energy capacities, making it one of India’s largest integrated green hydrogen production facilities.

The derivatives set to be produced at Pudimadaka include green methanol, green urea and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with a view to primarily export it.

The Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, announced the plans for the hub ahead of a visit to the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha regions. A statement released by the government said the PM will “lay the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art” facility.

Last September, Modi revealed that India had fulfilled numerous Paris commitments on green energy and the nation is now focused on “strengthening existing solutions,” and not “resting on these achievements.”

Hydrogen demand in India is surging, highlighted by the oversubscription of the country’s latest green hydrogen auction at 626,500 tonnes annually.

The auction received 14 bids to receive government funding for a combined 626,500 per year, despite being capped at 450,000. The scheme will offer producers a three-year incentive with caps set at $0.61/kg in the first year, $0.49/kg in the second and $0.37/kg in the third.
