Norwegian Hydrogen powers Veidekke’s asphalt plant with green energy

Veidekke has chosen Norwegian Hydrogen to supply its newly converted asphalt production plant with green hydrogen.

Located in Ålesund, Norway, the plant is scheduled to use green hydrogen produced in Hellesylt as an energy source for the heating process in asphalt production – commonly used in road construction industry.

Earlier this year, Norwegian Hydrogen also provided Veidekke’s other asphalt plant in Kristiansund with the low-carbon fuel, making it the “world’s first” factory capable of sustainable asphalt production.

Veidekke officially opened its second plant in Ålesund this week (September 4). Martin Holmqvist, Director of Asphalt at Veidekke Infrastructure, claimed he hopes to collaborate with Norwegian Hydrogen on future projects.

The Director added, “Norwegian Hydrogen is a player that not only talks but actually delivers and produces, making them an important partner for us.”

H2 View understands that traditional asphalt production in Norway, which requires high thermal energy, natural gas, propane, diesel and biodiesel, accounts for approximately 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

“There are huge climate benefits to be gained by using green hydrogen within several industry segments,” explained Simen Skaare Eriksen, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at Norwegian Hydrogen.

The Scandinavian hydrogen producer announced its Hellesylt plant delivered its first molecules of green hydrogen back in June (2024).

The 1.3 tonne-per-day hydrogen hub is now in its final commissioning and testing phase. In addition to Veidekke, the hub will deliver hydrogen to EV charging company Cyan Energy and maritime developer Skulebas.
